From Broadway To Hollywood: 12 Musicals Made Into Movies
It’s been a trend on Broadway for years to stage shows based on movies, both big and small. However, sometimes things can actually move in the opposite direction and movies have been developed out of hit Broadway shows. Check out the list of twelve famous musicals that have been converted to movies.
12. Maybe They’re Magic
The big-screen version of Stephen Sondheim’s beloved 1987 musical “Into the Woods” has been converted into a movie and it is expected to be released this month. Expect Broadway fans to occupy the front rows so as to get a best possible view of the movie.
11. The Sound of Music (1965)
Who knew that this play could actually turn into a glorious, sweeping epic. So much so, the movie was a better version of the stage show. No one can ever take the fun away from the Rodgers & Hammerstein classic – be it a musical or a movie.
10. West side Story (1961)
They say some musicals get outdated for all the reasons—maybe right or wrong. But the West Side Story’s stylized street-gang talk is not out-dated at all. In fact the entire musical, right from the first whistle to the final heartbreaking shot is just too riveting. They showed the world that yes, tough guys can dance.
9. Hairspray (2007)
For those of you who do not know, ‘Hairspray’, a John Waters indie flick had drag performer Divine as Edna, the ultimate Baltimore hausfrau. This musical went on to be converted into a roadway musical about desegregation and was then again converted into a movie.
8. Chicago (2002)
This musical got the credit of bringing back the big-screen musical. It also bagged a six-time Oscar, which included Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress, for Catherine Zeta-Jones. A unique feature of this musical was director Rob Marshall’s ability to stage the musical numbers as fantasy sequences.
7. Grease (1978)
Inspite of all the controversies that surrounded this musical, like girls dressing up trashy to get their guy, this musical has always been one of our favorites. The producers managed to take a silly, campy homage to the ’50s and turned it into one of the biggest summer blockbusters of all time.
6. How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (1967)
Robert Morse did an amazing job when he played the role as a window-washer who schemes his way to the corner office in this screen version of his 1961 Tony-winning Broadway role. We are sure that the musical-transformed-movie will keep you in high spirits throughout.
5. Dreamgirls (2006)
Jennifer Holliday killed her Broadway career by dancing her way through her musical shows. Once the musical was converted to a movie, we have to agree that Jennifer Hudson did justice to her role, which made her performance well worthy of her Oscar. Eddie Murphy is a revelation as the tragic James “Thunder” Early, and Beyoncé is perfectly cast as the Diana Ross–inspired Deena Jones.
4. Les Misérables (2012)
The musical which spoke about French revolutionaries, street urchins and a former prisoner seeking his redemption was converted to a movie after 25 long years. The team did an amazing job with the theatrical aspects, we have to admit.
3. Annie (1982)
For 10-years old kids, the Annie Broadway show may be the greatest thing that ever happened in their lives. The movie is expected to be released this Christmas, tarring Quvenzhané Wallis as Annie and Jamie Foxx as the rich guy.
2. A Chorus Line (1985)
Though the musical was a super hit, the movie turned out to be a huge flop both artistically and financially. It looks like the producer and director failed to figure out how to make the much loved Broadway show work.
Rent caused nothing less than a sensation when it opened Off-Broadway in January 1996. Many original cast members starred in the film adaptation, including Idina Menzel as Maureen. They were still able to belt out the rock operas tunes with abandon, keeping the show’s pedigree intact.
