In a world of uncertainty, protecting what’s most valuable to you has now become paramount.   Ensuring that your home and business is safe is critical; and the need for awareness and connectivity to protect your family, property and other things that matter most have become a way of life. The world of security systems and home surveillance technologies enables you to have this peace of mind while you keep in touch and stay connected to those people, possessions, and property that you value most. They help you stay connected anywhere, anytime, at home or on the go, through your PC, MAC, Smartphone or Tablet.

Know what you will need to protect your home so that you know exactly what featuresto look out for in a home security camera. Here are a few basic guidelines to be considered.

1. Scotopic adaptation

The lower a camera’s lux rating, the better it can see in the dark for night vision application. For viewing in total darkness, look for 0 lux with built-in IR illuminators. If the yard lights will be on, you can go with .01 lux; a starlit night, .001 lux.

2. Design

Do you want your camera to be noticed or to go unnoticed? Sometimes a camera that’s easy to see is an effective deterrent. If you’d rather be covert in your surveillance tactics, look for a stealthier design.

3. Tractable

A fixed cameras focus on one spot, which may be fine for your intended use. However, if you’d like to be able to watch a larger area, you might want to choose a camera that can be panned, tilted and zoomed in for a better look.

4. Web access (IP cameras)

For the same reason, you may want a camera that can be accessed via the Web. You’ll be able to see the yard, the front door or the patio from the screen of your iPhone or laptop computer.

5. Picture quality

As great as IP cameras are at granting access from anywhere, the video they transmit is usually choppier than the images transmitted by an analog camera. If image quality is important, an analog camera can still communicate over the web—you’ll just need to invest in extra equipment.

6. Weatherproof

Some cameras are better than others at handling the rain and other climatic variations. If your IP camera will be fully exposed to the elements, look for a waterproof rating of 65.

7. Other Tips

It is important to remember that the main purpose of a surveillance security system is to capture or deter criminals when suspicious activity might be happening around.Camera resolution is one of the most important features that a security camera can have, as a high-resolution surveillance system allows people to easily spot smaller details that low resolution cameras do not pick up on.

The two primary kinds of home security systems are those with wires, and those without.  Families which own their home, and have floors and walls which are easy to drill through without causing damage, are best suited for wired systems. For renters, wireless alarm systems are ideal as they have no drilling requirements and can be taken along when moving.

By means of window stickers, cameras, motion activated lights and alarms, and multiple key pads, you can customize your system to suit your needs perfectly. Consider your family’s needs to determine if you want motion activated alarms, forced entry alarms, or perhaps both.

Also, for greater convenience keep in mind tying your surveillance system into your home automation so video can be easily accessed on the home TVs or touch panels.
